There Is Marketing Value In Your Domain Name
While it's not essential, a good top level domain can make it easier for people to find you. Try to think of your web site name as the big sign above the door to your store in the mall. If your store sold candles, the sign certainly wouldn't say "Auto Parts" would it? Search engines do use your URL as one of the parts of your web site, especially Google for Adsense. In fact they seem to separate the URL from content in some cases.
